William Harvey Berghuis was born on November 19, 1913 to Jacob and Hattie (Van Buren) Berghuis on their family farm near Edgerton, Minnesota. He spent most of his youthful years near Edgerton except for two years in California and three in the Air Force. He was united in marriage to Lorraine (Bylsma) Brink on January 3, 1948. They spent all of their married life in the Edgerton community. He was a member of the First Reformed Church and was very involved in church activities, having served a number of terms on the church board. He was also a member of the church planning and building committee. He also served on the Edgerton Public School Board and Edgerton City Council. He was one of the very first to promote the building of the Edgerton Care Center, he was on the planning and building committee and then served a number of years on the board of directors. During his years in the Air Force, Bill served with the 15th Army Air Force, flew fifty one bombing missions over Hitler’s occupied Europe and earned the Air Medal with three oak leaf clusters and five battle stars. He retired from the State Bank of Edgerton in 1981 where he was also on the board of directors. In 2002, they became residents of Edgebrook apartments and later to the Assisted Living units. On August 26, 2014, he was moved to the Edgebrook Care Center under Hospice Care. Bill passed away and entered his heavenly home from Edgebrook Care Center at the age of 100 years, 10 months and 6 days. Bill’s love for his wife and family was second only to his love for his Lord and Savior.
Bill is survived by his wife Lorraine of Edgerton, special grand-daughter Julie Klomparens of Luverne, Minnesota; sisters: Ruth Temple of Orlando, Florida, Ethel (John) Wirt of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Esther Doughty of Sun City, Arizona; sisters-in-law Tressa Berghuis of Princeberg, Minnesota, Jo Berghuis of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Bernice Menning of Edgerton, Minnesota, and Rose (Al) Vanden Bosch of Edgerton. Bill is preceded in death by his daughter, Gloria Beth Klomparens; his parents; sisters: Ida Vanden Bosch, Alice Vanden Bosch, Bess De Boer, Mabel Scholten, and Nell Leighton; brothers: Ed, Ben and Jack; brothers-in-law, John Vanden Bosch, Pete Vanden Bosch, Lubertus De Boer, Con Scholten, Homer Leighton, Chuck Doughty and Lawrence Menning.
