Vernon H. Vis Obituary
Vernon Harold Vis, 85, of Lismore, MN, passed away on Tuesday, April 7, 2026, at the Cottage Hospice in Luverne, MN.
Vern was born on March 5, 1941, in Leota, Minnesota, to Henry and Tillie (Hamm) Vis. He attended Southwest Christian High School and spent his working years in a variety of roles, though he was best known and respected for his skill as a meat cutter. He retired fully in 2020.
On May 29, 1958, Vern married the love of his life, Rose Schoolmeester. Together they raised three children—Cindy, Teri, and Scott—and created a home filled with love, laughter, and countless memories. Vern cherished time spent with his family, whether on road trips or relaxing at the lake. He had a lifelong passion for raising cattle and enjoyed attending cattle sales, where he took great pride in studying pedigrees and helping others with their purchases. He also loved playing cards with family and friends, a pastime that brought him joy and connection throughout his life.
Vern was a longtime member of Bethel Christian Reformed Church, served as a Hardwick Volunteer Firefighter, and contributed to his community through his service on the Denver Township board.
He is lovingly remembered by his wife of 67 years, Rose Vis of Lismore; his children, Cindy (Lee) DeJongh of Hudson, CO, Teri (Greg) Richter of Rock Valley, IA, and Scott (Janelle) Vis of Brandon, SD; six grandchildren—Angela DeJongh, Amanda Howser, Melissa (Christopher) Rubens, Brooke Richter, Jason Vis, and Jenna Vis; three great-grandchildren—Lexy Padilla, Elijah (Arriana) Padilla, and Jacob (Taylor) Padilla; and five great-great-grandchildren—Quinn Mendoza, Xaiden, Elijah Jr., Madison, and Madeline Padilla. He is also survived by his siblings Joyce Schelhaas and Ivan Gene (Kris) Vis.
Vern was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Tillie Vis; an infant brother, Ivan Dean; his brother-in-law, Dalwyn Schelhaas, and his niece, Kristi Knutson.
The family extends a heartfelt thank you to the staff of Ava’s House and the Cottage Hospice for the compassionate care they provided to Vern.
