Peter “Pete” Vander Lugt, son of Hubert and Grace (Verbrugge) Vander Lugt, was born in Rock County, Minnesota on July 2, 1930. He lived west of Leota, Minnesota in his early years and attended Christian schools in Leota and Edgerton. Following that, he lived east of Edgerton, Minnesota until he received a draft notice for the United States Army.
His tour of duty was from February 1952 to November 1953. He spent one year in the Korean Engineering section, including road work and building bridges in demilitarized zones. He was honorably discharged from the United States Army as a sergeant.
Peter was united in marriage to Lauretta Slagter on March 30, 1954. The couple farmed west of Edgerton until 2002. Peter enjoyed reading books about service persons who served in World War II and read many church library books. He was a lifelong member of First Christian Reformed Church of Edgerton. He served as church elder and as an elder delegate to the synod. He was a daily prayer warrior for his family and church members and friends.
He quietly passed away on Saturday evening, December 21, 2019 at the Minnesota Veterans Home in Luverne, Minnesota at the age of 89 years, five months, and 19 days.
Peter is lovingly remembered by his five children, Alvin (Joyce) Vander Lugt, Marianne (Al) Meijer, Kevin (Bev) Vander Lugt, Glenn (Pearl) Vander Lugt, and Ruth Vander Lugt; 12 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; two brothers, James and John; one sister, Dorothy Baar; and many other loving friends and family members. He was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Lauretta; his parents; and three sisters, Johanna Wieberdink, Alma DeVries, and Marie Dyk.
