Nelson Post
was born on March 7, 1921, to James and Jennie (Schelhaas) Post at their home in rural Edgerton, Minnesota. He attended country school around Edgerton, Woodstock, and Chandler. He graduated from the Reformed Bible Institute and Western Michigan University. He was drafted into the United States Army in 1942 and was stationed in Alaska and South Carolina. On August 4, 1948, Nelson was united in marriage to Fannie Gunnink at the Chandler Christian Reformed Church in Chandler, Minnesota. After their marriage, he worked for a plumbing company in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Then he taught at a Christian school in Sunnyside, Washington. He returned to Western Michigan where he was a purchasing agent for the same plumbing company . Then the family moved to Delavan, Wisconsin where Nelson worked as a Christian school principal and teacher. Eventually the family moved to Kentwood, Michigan where Nelson taught at Wayland Public School. After retirement the couple resided in Farmington, New Mexico where Nelson and Fannie started a Christian School. The couple traveled and volunteered in many towns across the United States and also in New Zealand. In 2001, the couple moved to Edgerton and lived in the Independent Apartments of Edgebrook. In August of 2014, after a brief hospital stay, he moved to the Edgebrook Care Center where he passed away on Monday, December 8, 2014, at the age of 93 years, nine months, and one day.
Nelson was a member of Bethel Christian Reformed Church in Edgerton and also of the Gideons. He loved spending his time bird-watching, hiking, working with horses, travelling, and volunteering . Nelson had a servant’s heart and always used his handyman skills to help others.
Nelson is lovingly remembered by his wife of 66 years, Fannie, of Edgerton; two children, Philip (Mary) Post of Huntley, Illinois, and Lois (Keith) Boersma of Ashton, Iowa; 10 grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; siblings, Geneva Toering of Lansing, Illinois, Frank (Arlene) Post of Chandler, Edith Walhof of Edgerton, Evelyn (Edwin) Lubben of Leota, Minnesota, Kathy (Lou) Kuhl of Worthington, Minnesota, and James (Susan) Post of Lake Wilson, Minnesota.
Nelson was preceded in death by his parents; two infant daughters; two sisters, Bernice Manderschied and Ada DeKoekoek; and one brother, Walter Post.
Memorials are preferred to the Gideons and Kuyper College (Formerly the Reformed Bible College) in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
Burial will be in the Chandler Memorial Cemetery in Chandler, Minnesota prior to the service on Friday.
