Harvey Lee Sas was born August 3, 1931, to Dan and Anna (Tinklenberg) Sas on the family farm in Murray County, Minnesota. He attended elementary school at the Leota Christian School and went on to complete the 10th grade at Nobles County School Distrist #58 while helping his parents on the farm.
He was drafted, and at Army processing he was selected to receive his training with the United States Marine Corp. On April 3, 1952 he married Gertrude Koelewyn and one week later he began basic training at Camp Pendleton, California, where Gertrude resided with him until he went to Korea. He fought in the front lines of the Korean War until he was honorably discharged on March 25, 1954. When he returned to the United States, he began farming the family farm in Murray County. Farming was his chosen vocation until he retired from farming with a farm sale on October 8, 1994, when they moved to their home in Leota, Minnesota. After retiring to Leota, he enjoyed working at the Pipestone Livestock Auction and playing cards at the Leota Café.
Harvey and Gertrude were married 67 years and were blessed with two children: Daryl Fay and Gayle Aileen. Harvey was a life-time member of Ebenezer Christian Reformed Church and spent many hours working for Leota Christian School as a member of the school board. He and Gertrude did almost everything together including Harvey helping Gertrude fold laundry at Edgebrook when she had a Sunday shift. His passion was farming, and his great joy in life was spending time with his children and grandchildren.
On November 27, 2015, Harvey and Gertrude moved to Edgebrook apartments where they resided until August 7, 2017, when they moved to Assisted Living at Edgebrook. After a fall and fractured pelvis, Harvey became a resident of the Minnesota Veterans Home in Luverne, Minnesota. Harvey passed away and entered his heavenly home on November 24, 2019, at the age of 88 years, 3 months and 21 days.
Harvey is lovingly remembered by his wife, Gertrude; two children, Daryl (Jane) Sas and their children, Kathryn and Megan (Noah) Barber; Gayle (Duane) Walhof and their children, Jesse Lee and Jamie (Brady) Hettwer; sister, Marlene Walsh; sisters-in-law, Genevieve Sas and Lavonne Sas; brother-in-law, Clares Christians and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Dan and Anna; and siblings, Anthony and Wilbert.
Blessed be his memory.
