Florence Vander Top was born on September 20, 1921, in Battle Plain Township, Rock County, Minnesota to Henry and Lyda (Vanden Bosch) Blom. She was baptized, grew up and made profession of her faith at the Bethel Reformed Church in Leota, Minnesota. At the age of 5, she moved with her family to Nobles County and attended Leota Christian School through the 6th grade. Florence’s final two years of schooling was received at Nobles County District #63. After graduating, she did housework at various places. On June 11, 1942, Florence was united in marriage to Dick Vander Top at her parent’s home. They made their home on a farm in Moulton Township, Murray County, Minnesota. Their marriage was blessed with four children, two sons and two daughters, Bertha, Harvey, Verlyn and Brenda. Dick preceded Florence in death in 2005. In October of 2013, Florence moved into the Edgebrook Care Center in Edgerton, Minnesota where she died peacefully on Friday, January 29, 2016 at the age of 94 years, four months and nine days.
Florence was a lifetime member of the First Christian Reformed Church in Edgerton where she was active in Bible studies. Florence enjoyed crocheting and quilting. She loved to read; Florence religiously read her daily devotionals and was a faithful member of the library. Most importantly, Florence enjoyed the time that was spent with her family, especially at family gatherings.
She is lovingly remembered by her sons, Harv and Judi (Blankespoor) Vander Top of Edgerton and Vern and Mary (Van Essen) Vander Top of Loveland, Colorado; daughter, Brenda and Dave Hamm of Leota, Minnesota; son-in-law Don Uittenbogaard of Sanborn, Iowa; eight grandsons; four granddaughters; 20 great-grandsons; and five great-granddaughters. She is preceded in death by her husband, Dick; daughter, Bertha Uittenbogaard; sisters, Artie Norcott and Lydia Veldhuizen; and brothers, Richard Blom and Henry Blom.
