Eugene “Gene” Carroll Fey was born on December 5, 1948 in Pipestone, Minnesota to Ervin and Evelyn (Dalthorp) Fey. He was raised in Edgerton, where he received his education at Edgerton Christian Elementary and Edgerton High School. After high school he continued his education at Pipestone Vocational School to become an auto mechanic. After graduation he worked for his father at Fey’s Texaco in Edgerton until 1977. In 1978, he moved to Longmont, Colorado where he worked at McGuckin Hardware in Boulder, Colorado and later, Tiger Auto Parts in Fort Collins, Colorado. In the mid-80’s he moved back to Minnesota to an acreage east of Edgerton and worked for an auto parts store in Worthington, Minnesota. For a few years he also worked at Fey Industries in Edgerton. At that time he went to a vocational school in Granite Falls to receive his boilers license in order to serve as the janitor at the Edgerton High School. In the late 90s, Gene was diagnosed with diabetes and lost his leg. A few years later he moved into Edgerton and was diagnosed with renal cancer. He remained at his home until August 28, 2014, when he was moved into the Pipestone County Hospice House in Pipestone, where he passed away on September 15, 2014 at the age of 65 years, 9 months, and 10 days.
Gene was a member of the First Christian Reformed Church in Edgerton. He loved anything with a motor, whether it was working on Toyotas, snowmobiling, 4 wheel drive off-roading in the mountains of Colorado or in Northern Minnesota. His driving was always accompanied by Loretta Lynn on the radio. Gene also built, sold, and traded many types of utility trailers. In the recent years, he enjoyed attending auctions looking for many types of furniture and antiques.
Gene is lovingly remembered by his three brothers, Roger (Gloria) Fey of Edgerton, Dennis (Linda) Fey of Longmont, Colorado, and Scott (Lisa) Fey of Edgerton; one brother-in-law, Del and Jo Fredin of Ft. Collins, Colorado; one sister-in-law, Mavis and Mike Dubbelde of Edgerton; and several nieces and nephews.
Gene was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Starr; and one brother, Mick.
