Elaine Eva Lou Rieck was born on February 28, 1929, to John and Minnie (Barck) Lafrentz on a farm near Hardwick, Minnesota. She attended country school through the eighth grade. As a young girl around 12 years of age, she did house cleaning for area neighbors. One of her favorite social activities as a young lady was going to dances in Hardwick. She loved to polka and waltz.
She was baptized, confirmed and married at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Trosky. She was united in marriage to Raymond Rieck on November 16, 1945. To that union were born four children: Rosalyn, Lynette, Gerald, and David. Ray and Elaine were blessed with 65 years of marriage. During those years, Elaine enjoyed being a hard-working farmer’s wife. From 1962-1969, she became the first lady bus driver in Edgerton, Minnesota. On snowy days the school knew if Elaine couldn’t make it into town, school would close for a snow day.
Elaine had many talents and enjoyed many hobbies over the years. She loved dancing, square dancing, sewing, crocheting, doing jigsaw puzzles, gardening, fishing, and playing pinochle. She also gave her husband and sons awesome haircuts.
On July 26, 2012, Elaine became a resident of Edgebrook Care Center in Edgerton where she died on Saturday, September 26, 2020. She told her family many times that Edgebrook was a great place to be.
Elaine is lovingly remembered by her four children, Rosalyn Rieck of Omaha, Nebraska, Lynette Ford of Olathe, Kansas, Gerald (Deborah) Rieck of Edgerton, and David (Pat) Rieck of Edgerton; 15 grandchildren, 38 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren; brother, Delmer Lafrentz of Brandon, South Dakota; and brother-in-law, Donald (Virginia) Rieck of Phoenix, Arizona.
