Egbert Raymond Hulstein was born on August 12, 1933 in Sioux County, Iowa to Raymond and Della (Gritters) Hulstein. He attended country school in Sioux County, Sioux Center Christian School, and one year of Western Christian High School. The family then moved to Edgerton where Ed attended Southwest Christian High School for one year before attending Edgerton Public High School, graduating with the class of 1952. After he completed his education he served in the United States Army for two years from 1954 – 1956 and was stationed in Germany during the Korean Conflict. On September 27, 1956, Ed was united in marriage to Arlene Bleyenburg in Edgerton, Minnesota. For two years Ed worked at E & R Auto in Edgerton before the family moved to California in 1958, where they lived for six years. In 1964, the family returned to southwest Minnesota and farmed until Ed retired. In 2013, Ed moved into the Edgebrook Care Center where he died on Thursday, October 22, 2015 at the age of 82 years, two months, and 10 days.
Ed was a member of the First Christian Reformed Church in Edgerton where he served in the past as a Deacon and an Elder. He was on the Edgerton Christian Elementary School Board, the Land O’ Lakes Board, the Coop Creamery Board, the Progress Board, and was instrumental in starting the Friendship Class. Ed was also a member of the American Legion Post #42 in Edgerton. Ed was a hardworking, compassionate, and patient man. He always made time in his schedule for his family and his caring concern for others will always be remembered.
Ed is lovingly remembered by his wife of 59 years, Arlene, of Edgerton; six sons, Brad (Marilyn), Dave (Donna), Ron (Narla) all of Edgerton, Jerry (Lori) of Eden Prairie, Minnesota, Mike (Sue) of Edgerton, and Scott (Jodi) of Sioux Center, Iowa; 16 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; four brothers, Raymond (Teen) of Edgerton, Leonard (Jean) of Chandler, Minnesota, Delmar (Faye) of Edgerton, and LeRoy (Faye) of Woodstock, Minnesota; and six sisters, Berdie Broek of Sioux Center, Iowa, Marge Mesman of Edgerton, Garneth (Harold) Van Surksum of Luverne, Minnesota, Sharon (Pete) Struiksma of Bellflower, California, Iva Hoogeveen of Brandon, South Dakota, and Karon (Leland) Blom of Pipestone, Minnesota. Ed was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Loie Buyert; and one brother, Gary Hulstein.
Arrangements are through the Colonial Funeral Chapel in Edgerton.
