Bertha Van't Hof

Bertha Van’t Hof was born on November 21, 1934, to Evert and Nellie (DeKam) Bakker in Murray County, Minnesota. She was raised on a farm near Chandler, Minnesota, where she attended school through the eighth grade. Following her education, she remained busy helping on her parents’ farm along with doing housekeeping and child care work for the Cornie Van’t Hof family. It was through this that Bertha met Leonard Van’t Hof and on January 3, 1958, the couple was united in marriage at the Chandler Christian Reformed Church. The couple moved to California for one year and then to Luverne, Minnesota, where they resided for the next two years. They then lived on various acreages before settling on one south of Edgerton, Minnesota in the early 1960s.

    Bertha began raising their family and helping Leonard on the farm. She later took a position as a nurse’s aid at Edgebrook Care Center in Edgerton. She would eventually transfer into the housekeeping department at the care center. After 36 years, Bertha retired in October of 2014. She then volunteered at the thrift store in Worthington for many years. She also kept busy spoiling her children with canning and her grandchildren with cookies. As the result of a stroke, in March 2018, Bertha became a resident at the Edgebrook Care Center where on Saturday, October 26, 2019, she died peacefully, to be with her Lord and Savior, at the age 84 years, 11 months and five days, with family by her side.

    Bertha was a member of the Ebenezer Christian Reformed Church in Leota, Minnesota. She simply enjoyed helping others and giving of herself. She loved board games, puzzles, and playing cards. She could never get enough time being with her family, especially her grandchildren.

    Bertha is lovingly remembered by her husband of 61 years, Leonard; five children, Lloyd (Bev) Van’t Hof of Edgerton, Arlin (Lin) Van’t Hof of Edgerton, Linda (Jeff) Bleyenburg of Edgerton, Deb Van’t Hof of Edgerton, Val (Kyle) Lindquist of Siren, Wisconsin; 11 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; siblings, Nellie Vos of Slayton, Minnesota, John (Rosalie) Bakker of Madison, South Dakota, Arta (Lorace) Greggs of Cherokee, Iowa, Tony (Janet) Bakker of Modesto, California, Johanna Vander Steen of Luverne, Minnesota, Goldie (Willis) VanRoekel of Corsica, South Dakota, and Marvin (Loretta) Bakker of Chandler, Minnesota; and other family and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; and two brothers, Guys Bakker and Pete Bakker.
