Bernice Alyda (Westenberg) Hendricks was born on April 4, 1920, to John and Clara (Muilenberg) Westenberg in Edgerton, Minnesota. She attended Edgerton Public School and High School, graduating in 1937. On December 27, 1940, she was united in marriage to Adrian Hendricks in Edgerton. For a time the couple farmed near Edgerton and then near Jasper, Minnesota. They moved into Edgerton in 1960 to the home she resided in for many years. Adrian preceded her in death on February 27, 1988, and Bernice continued to reside at home. Around 2005, she moved into the apartments at Edgebrook and then into Edgebrook Care Center on February 1, 2016. Within the last two weeks she had had bronchitis and on Easter Sunday she had a massive stroke. She was admitted into the Sanford Hospital in Sioux Falls, South Dakota where she passed away on Monday, April 17, 2017, at the age of 97 years and 13 days.
She was a member of the First Reformed Church in Edgerton where she was a member of the Ladies Circle. She enjoyed making pigs in a blanket with the other ladies. Bernice was an avid card player: playing pinochle, hand and foot, and many other games. She loved to read books, do word searches, and crossword puzzles. She also enjoyed crocheting and making items for family members. Family was very important to her and she knew each and every one of her grand and great-grandchildren’s birthdays.
Bernice is lovingly remembered by her son, Ron (Margrit) Hendricks of Marietta, Georgia; three daughters, Norma (Ed) Krosschell of Orange City, Iowa, Darlene (Bruce) Leimer of South Haven, Minnesota, and Donna (Scott) Olson of Jackson, Minnesota; 10 grandchildren, Mike (Charlene) Hendricks, Kevin (Lisa) Hendricks, James (Katrina) Hendricks, Perry (Kimber) Krosschell, Scott (Stacy) Krosschell, Joshua (Libby) Leimer, Zeb (DeDe) Leimer, Nicole (Eric) Johnson, Matthew (Kristina) Sankey, and Bethany Olson; 24 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Adrian; one infant great-granddaughter, Chloe Krosschell; two brothers, Stanley (Helen) Westenberg, and Dick (Martha) Westenberg; and two sisters, Nellie (Pete) Tolsma, and Alvina (Dewey) DenOuden.
