Alvin Bernard Vanden Bosch was born on June 22, 1927 near Edgerton to Tom H. and Grace (Tinklenberg) Vanden Bosch. Al grew up on the family farm, attending country school through grade 4, and Edgerton Christian through 10th grade. He graduated from Western Christian High in Hull, IA in 1945. He went on to receive his teaching degree from Calvin College in Grand Rapids, MI.

On June 17, he married his high school sweetheart, Rosella M. Brink. Al and Rose moved to North Haledon, NJ where he taught at Eastern Christian High School for 2 years. He went on to serve in teaching and administration roles at Christian schools in Oskaloosa, IA, Kanawha, IA, Orange City, IA and South Holland, IL. His final role involved lobbying for state aid to non-public schools in Illinois and Indiana.

Following his retirement, Al, Rose, and their daughter Laurie moved to a duplex they built in Edgerton. He and Rose moved to Edgebrook Assisted Living in 2021 where he resided until his death.
