Dr. Albertus “Bert” Schelhaas was born on February 27, 1932 to Conrad and Ella (Hofkamp) Schelhaas in Edgerton, Minnesota. He graduated from Edgerton High School in 1950. Following his education, he enlisted in the United States Air Force and served during the Korean War. On August 26, 1955, he was united in marriage to Reona Olivier. Their union was blessed with four children and 60 years of marriage together. In their early years, they moved to Minneapolis where Bert attended Dental School at the University of Minnesota graduating in 1961. The couple moved back to Edgerton where Bert practiced dentistry until he retired in 2001. Bert entered the care of Sanford Hospice Cottage on Tuesday, December 15, 2015. He died there peacefully with his family by his side on Wednesday, December 16, 2015 at the age of 83 years.
Bert was a member of the First Reformed Church in Edgerton. He was active within the life of the congregation serving as an elder and deacon. He had also served within various civic organizations. Bert enjoyed playing fast-pitch softball, bowling, hunting, and fishing, and especially time spent with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Bert and Reona took their family across the country throughout the years and continued to travel with their fifth wheel and spending summers at Lake Carlos. They are members of the Holiday Ramblers. In retirement, Bert converted his office to his “studio” in which he worked with stained glass, making unique items, several that were national award winners.
Bert will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Reona; four children, Juanita (Jay) Anliker of Primghar, Iowa, Ardeth (Dean) Fransen of Edgerton, Minnesota, Bud Schelhaas of Edgerton, Minnesota, and Drew (Nancy) Schelhaas of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; grandchildren, Josalynn (Bob) Agnew, Shaun (Carrie) Fransen, Jamin (LeJeana) Anliker, Bret Fransen, Erika (Adam) Kellenberger, Jack Schelhaas, Ben Schelhaas and eight great-grandchildren; sisters, Phyllis Kroschell and Hazel Prins. He was preceded in death by his parents, Conrad and Ella; and his brothers, Ed and Glenn.
