Agnes (Hanenburg) Vander Pol Obituary

Agnes Hanenburg Vander Pol was born to Peter and Hattie (Hoitenga) Hanenburg on April 2, 1912 on a farm northwest of Edgerton, MN.

She attended Edgerton Christian School and graduated from the eighth grade.  On June 3, 1936 she married Jack Vander Pol.  Jack and Art Broekhuis, Sr. ran a trucking and busing business from 1936 to 1946.  Jack and Agnes lived in Edgerton until the spring of 1946 when they moved to a farm southwest of Edgerton, where they raised their family of six children.

In 1964 they moved to the great grandfather Vander Pol farm southwest of Edgerton on the Pipestone/Rock County line, where their son Mike and Gladi have lived since 1976.

After Jack’s heart attack in 1976, they moved to their new home in Edgerton.  Jack died in July of that year.  Agnes continued to live there until 2006 when she moved to the Edgebrook apartments.  In 2007 she suffered a stroke and entered Edgebrook Care Center and was a resident there until her death on June 2, 2016.

Agnes was a faithful member of Bethel Christian Reformed Church where she was active in the women’s societies. A devout Christian who expressed and lived her faith, she read and studied the Bible daily until her vision failed.  She made a point of telling her children that she prayed for them and her grandchildren and great grandchildren everyday, praying for their physical safety, but especially for their spiritual welfare.

She was known for her hand woven rag rugs and beautiful bed quilts. All her children and grandchildren received and treasured them.

On April 2 of 2012 she commemorated her one-hundredth birthday.  A celebration in her honor was held in the Verdoes Room at Edgebrook where many relatives and friends came to help her celebrate.

Agnes was preceded in death by her husband Jack, and her siblings Jake Hanenburg, Jennie Wolterstorff, Dewey Hanenburg, Etta De Boer, Charles Hanenburg, Julia Sterenberg, and Trena Schelhaas.  She is survived by her sister Clara Kogeler and her brother Ted Hanenburg.  All of her children and spouses are still living.  They are Nelson and Joan Vander Pol, Mike and Gladi Vander Pol, Vernon and Mina Vander Pol, Lila and Paul Clapp, Will and Christine Vander Pol and Warren and Pat Vander Pol.  19 grandchildren and 53 great grandchildren survive her.
