Samona Johana Gilman passed away on October 16, 2019, at Edgebrook Care Center in Edgerton, MN.
Samona was born September 27, 1921 to Edward and Johana Bakker. She received her education at the Edgerton Public School. She lived and worked at her parents home until December 13, 1941, when she married Peter Gilman, also of Edgerton. They spent their first years in Oregon while Peter served in the military.
Samona was a faithful member of the First Reformed Church in Edgerton. The Ruth circle was the main focus of her work, where she initiated the “pig-in-the-blanket” fund raising project. The sale of the “pigs” to customers all over the country generated money which was gifted to missions and has continued for forty years.
Samona’s hobbies included quilting, sewing, baking, and cooking. It was in the kitchen that her family would testify that she was unparalleled. She also worked for a brief time at Fey Industries, Edgerton Public School, and Edgebrook Care Center.
She was preceded in death by her husband Peter, a daughter, Mona Sehr, sisters Lena Baker, Julia Mulder, Esther Schelhaas, Elizabeth Vander Beek, and Lorena Vander Burgt, and a great grandson, Lennon Gilman.
Samona is survived by her children, Allen (Sharon) of Rochester, MN, Randall Gilman of Salt Lake City UT., and Gary (Julie) Gilman of Denver, CO. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Todd (Debbie) Hosford of Phoenix., AZ. Kristine Buchanan (John) of Laveen AZ., Pete Gilman (Liz) of Byron, MN and Amity Gilman (Antonio Tamariz) of Alexandria, VA., and son-in-law Howard Sehr of Gold Canyon, AZ. In addition five great grandchildren survive: Alexander Gosford, Katlin Alvarez, Elliot, Rowan and Sidney Gilman.
