ROGER VERLAN POOL was born on November 26, 1937 to Peter and Allie (Baker) Pool in Leota, Minnesota. He grew up in Edgerton, Minnesota and moved to Pella, Iowa to attend college. Roger married Joan DeBoer on November 15, 1957. Following their marriage, they moved to Minneapolis, Minnesota. During that time, Roger began working for Onan Generator Corp as an electrical engineer. He continued to work for Onan for the next 20 years. In those 20 years, the couple welcomed three daughters and Roger continued his education at the U of M. The family moved to Edgerton in 1976. While there, he opened Rustrap Mfg. Rustrap would later become a tool and die shop. Roger retired in the year 2000 and spent many years traveling, spending winters in California. Roger was admitted to the hospital for lung repair surgery in June 2018. Other illness followed throughout the summer. Roger was admitted to Pipestone Hospice House on October 2, 2018, and died on Wednesday, October 3, at the age of 80 years, 10 months, and seven days.
Roger was a member of Bethel Christian Reformed Church in Edgerton and served as an Elder and a Deacon. He was very active in the community serving on many boards and committees as well as being a volunteer member of the Edgerton Fire Department. Roger and Joan spent many winters traveling and staying in California. Roger loved camping, tennis, sailing, and visiting with family and friends. Because of his love of camping and the outdoors, Roger dreamt of having a campground in Edgerton, which became reality in the Rock River Park. He was also involved in starting the Edgerton Museum and spent many hours working there. Roger was a patient man who seldom got angry or complained, even though he spent many years not feeling well. He worked with determination and persistence to achieve goals such as broadcasting the First Christian Reformed church service on the radio in the 1950’s and obtaining a new organ for the church.
He is lovingly remembered by his wife of nearly 61 years, Joan; his three daughters, Wendy (John) Herrmann of Sioux Falls, Julie (Tony) Peterson of Minneapolis, and Tami (Dale) Mesman of Edgerton; his grandchildren, Chris (Kelly) Peterson, Jessica (Rick) Lucken, Tiffany (Travis) Urban, Kari (Andy) Schuster, Reed (Carrie) Mesman, Ethan (Erica) Mesman, Spencer Mesman and friend Ashley Bos, and Alexis (Devin) Klarenbeek; 15 great-grandchildren; one brother, Curtis (Charmelle) Pool of Bainbridge Island, Washington; and many other loving friends and family members. Roger was preceded in death by his parents, Peter and Allie; and one great-granddaughter, Angela.
