Randall Butson Obituary

Randall “Randy” Lee Butson, son of the late Dale “Pete” Butson and Ivalea (Winters) Butson was born August 15, 1953 in Mankato, MN and raised on the family farm outside of Garden City, MN. Randy was baptized as an infant at the Garden City Log Cabin Lutheran Church and confirmed in 1967 at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Vernon Center, MN. He attended Garden City school and graduated from Wellcome Memorial High School in 1971.

He attended Mankato State University and graduated in 1977 with a B.S. degree in Elementary Education. He accepted a teaching and coaching position in Edgerton, MN where he planned to work for a year or two to gain experience.  Instead, he was proud to spend his entire career of 38 years at Edgerton Public School as a teacher, coach, and Athletic Director - impacting the lives of countless students, athletes and teachers.

Randy was united in marriage to Lisa Bleyenburg on June 4, 1983 in Edgerton. This union was blessed with four wonderful children. When Randy wasn’t teaching, coaching or driving bus he spent his time remodeling their home and volunteering to complete numerous projects for his family and others without hesitation.  Randy served on the consistory at First Reformed Church in several roles, sang in the choir, went on mission trips, taught Sunday School, volunteered with the youth and most recently served as Elder.

After retirement in 2015, Randy was a regular substitute teacher and enjoyed driving bus for students in the morning and afternoon. The rest of his days were filled with golf, reading, camping, winning Cribbage tournaments, home projects, traveling and most importantly, spending time with his wife, children and grandchildren who he adored and would do anything for.

On May 24, 2019 Randy was surrounded by family as he passed away peacefully at his home in Edgerton after a brave and confident battle with cancer. His beautiful life will be forever cherished in the lives of his wife of 36 years, children: Megan (Andrew) Wismer of Omaha, NE; Macy (James) Moore of Omaha, NE; Whitney Butson of LaCrosse, WI (and friend Max Dobson); and Wyatt Butson of Omaha, NE; and five energetic grandchildren who loved their Grandpa so much; Aaliyah Moore, Levi Wismer, Reid Wismer, Everson Moore and Emma Wismer.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two infant daughters who are now so happy to have their Dad with them.  He is survived by his parents-in-law, Art and Rose Bleyenburg; Brother Jeff (Judy) Butson, Sister Debee (Jeff) Floren; Sister-in-law Deb (Jim) DenHerder; Brother-in-law Jeff (Linda) Bleyenburg; numerous nieces and nephews, cousins and cherished friends who are all better for knowing and being loved by Randy.
